Henna hair dye
Henna or “Lawsonia inermis” is an ancient flowering plant which has been used for thousand of years in temporary tattoos as the plant has amazing staining properties. With time it has been discovered that this henna can also be used for coloring the nail as well as the hair, making hair dying safe and easy to perform. The henna plant contains lawsone, an ingredient with coloring properties, which applied on the skin or hair will leave a burgundy colored mark. It is this ingredient which permits henna to be used as a natural dye, so in order for coloration process to take place the henna leafs have to be broken to release the lawsone. Henna usually is dried and grounded for safe keeping and best pigmentation. By mixing the henna powder with water and a bit of citric acid(freshly squeezed lemon juice) a paste is formed. This paste helps release the lawsone, which applied on the hair or skin will give a red coloration. The only color which can be obtained with henna is red, so “black henna” which is sometimes confused with henna is not actually henna. The “black henna” product is not healthy to use on the hair as it contains a mix of unhealthy ingredients which can damage your tresses. The way to distinguish henna by black henna is through the coloration of the powder. Henna powder has a green coloration as it is made out of dried and crushed leaves while black henna has a darker coloration due to the mix of ingredients.
Indigo hair dye
Indigo or “Indigofera tinctoria” is a plant which has been used for centuries in dying, as this plant has a staining capability, creating an indigo colored stain. Indigo has been used for dying clothes due to the lovely natural looking coloration obtained, and with time people started using indigo as a part of hair coloring. The indigo leafs are usually dried and grounded fine to create a powder. The powder obtained it mixed with water and henna, to obtain the right mix for the desired brunette hair color. The mixture needs to be properly done and left to set before application of the hair. The combination cf colors will create a dark, brunette rich hair color.

Different mixes have been discovered using henna and indigo, meant to create brown hair color as well so women can benefit from their desired hair color more naturally.
